How will your financial support be used?

In giving to the Collateral Damage Project, you’re helping us achieve our goals of creating a proactive dialogue and preventing suicide.

“Why do you need to raise money for suicide prevention?”

Backed by research, suicide prevention efforts have a psychological and social basis. Awareness around the warning signs, risks, and facts about suicidal behaviour is important alone but funds put toward preventing suicide will be used in many ways.

The Left Behind by Suicide uses donations to pursue the following initiatives:

– Sharing images and stories of those who have lost loved ones and friends to suicide
– Public education about mental health and suicide prevention
– Advocating for changes to curriculum, policies and legislation that impact suicide and prevention
– Programs and resources for survivors of suicide loss and people at risk

All donations make a difference in the lives of many and we measure it by the difference we make in individuals.

Creating a proactive dialogue on and breaking the stigma that surrounds suicide.

Your financial support will go towards creating and maintaining our website, videos, print material and other multimedia that educate and provide tangible tools for survivors of suicide, those struggling with thoughts of suicide and anybody who wants to learn more.

Your financial support allows our team, especially our founder Scott Chisholm, to work directly with individuals, groups and organizations across Canada to be a catalyst to empowering local suicide prevention initiatives and events. Some of these initiatives include; the Collateral Damage Project exhibit that travels throughout Nova Scotia, the Arizona Project where Brian Byrne learned the importance of how to talk about suicide and was empowered to do so in all of his interviews. We believe that working directly with ‘celebrities’ so they can learn how to talk about suicide in the media has a measurable impact on the stigma that surrounds suicide. Another great example of your funds at work is the ‘Group of 7 guys’ in Thunder Bay.

Advocating for education and training on suicide prevention and awareness.

Your financial support will go towards advocating and facilitating ‘gatekeeper’ training such as SafeTALK, ASIST and Mental Health First Aid for professionals (teachers, coaches, first responders, nurses, social workers, etc), in all workplaces and in the community. We believe that this training should be available anywhere First Aid, CPR and WHIMIS are taught.

Creating the Collateral Damage Project Book and Exhibits.

This is the core of the Collateral Damage Project. Your financial support will go towards creating a book and gallery exhibit of portraits and stories of people who have lost loved ones and friends to suicide. The book will also include valuable ‘tools’ for learning how to talk about suicide with; family (especially of children), friends, in our workplaces and in our communities.

Your generous financial support will help break the stigma that surrounds suicide and help to prevent suicide.

Every dollar donated goes directly towards operating costs, allowing the Collateral Damage Project to travel to every province and territory in Canada, creating a powerful, collective voice that shouts, “Not talking about it isn’t working.”
